The creeping nanny state, and those who support it, on display in today's Mercury News:

Santa Cruz on Tuesday became the first big Northern California coastal town to endorse a ban on smoking on the sands, giving new life to efforts to keep the state's beaches from becoming giant ashtrays.

I have been to many beaches in and near Santa Cruz, and none of them are in danger of becoming ashtrays. Usually when I go to the beach I do not see a single cigarette butt.

In a related story, Santa Cruz officials today announced that they are contemplating banning marine life from the Pacific Ocean. This is seen by all as a crucial first step in preventing the lovely waters of the coast from becoming one big fish toilet. :P
