New Planet Discovered

Or more likely, Pluto demoted. The newly discovered Kuiper Belt object, 2003UB313, is somewhere between Pluto and the Moon in size. I often wondered in my youth whether a tenth planet would be discovered; I didn't think that when I was an adult the number of planets would be reduced to eight.

2003UB313 is 97 AU's from the Sun. That's an even nine billion miles away, which means the new planet revolves around the sun just faster than once per millenium.

A later article in the Pasadena Star-News (how apropos!) says that 2003UB313 has a perihelion of 3.3 billion miles, and an orbital period of 560 years.
