The Declarer (Floyd McWilliams' Blog)

I frequently criticize the San Jose Mercury News, but at least that paper is not a complete joke like its competitor to the north, the San Francisco Chronicle. On entering the corner store today my eye was caught by the Saturday edition of the Chron -- which made sense as the outer top half of said newspaper was not a front page so much as a big wet sticky kiss bestowed upon special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's face took up half the space above the fold; the other half was devoted to a quote from this story:

"The need to get to the bottom of what happened, and whether national security was compromised by inadvertence, by recklessness, by maliciousness is extremely important. We need to know the truth. And anyone who would go into a grand jury and lie and obstruct and impede the investigation has committed a serious crime."

Except that ... national security was not compromised by inadvertence, recklessness, maliciousness, bird flu, or AJ "FF" Pierzynski winning a World Series ring. Fitzgerald said as much himself. Awhile back I mocked liberals for their sudden enthusiasms ( Cambodian-border-violating Vietnam veterans, the sanctity of CIA secrecy, etc), and this new enthusiasm in favor of independent prosecutors is no more commendable -- or believable.
